Freak Show Postcard Gallery

Here’s a selection of freak show mementos, circus and carnival promo cards and ‘carte de visites’…

These are mainly sourced from the American circuit of the mid-1800s to the 1930s, when traveling shows such as the legendary Barnum and Bailey circus proved hugely popular with the prurient public, catering to their appetites for the bizarre and outlandish by displaying all sorts of human mutations. Popular attractions included the ubiquitous ‘Fat Lady’ (apparently at the top of the Freak hierarchy), albinos, midgets, hermaphrodites, giants, amputees, etc.

Enjoy this rare glimpse into the world of the genuine, actual, most wonderful – freakshow!
